CHARACTER NAME: Milo Dumas
CHARACTER AGE: 28
SPECIES: Witch.

BACKGROUND & HISTORY: Milo was originally born in Siren Cove to two high profile witches, Eleanor and Rhys Dumas. The Dumas witches have traditionally all played with the darker side of things, and Rhys was no different. He introduced Eleanor to the dark shortly after meeting her, and together they practiced a number of shady spells. Rhys in particular had an affinity for siphoning power, which he can do to objects, celestial events, and importantly, other witches. After Milo was born, it became clear quickly that he had the same abilities. His magic is dark in nature, and growing up he was taught that this was a good thing, that it would make his parents proud.
The Millers lived a few doors down and the two families struck up a friendship of sorts. The two sets of parents practiced magic together, often less than savoury magic, and Milo met Sarah, their daughter. While they were younger they were thick as thieves, playing together outside while their parents practiced magic inside. Sarah’s friendship gave Milo a lighter side, and he began to question the things his parents had taught him. By the time he was 15, everything started sliding downhill. Eleanor and Rhys had been planning for years to increase their strength by siphoning another pair of witches’ powers, and after witnessing the Miller’s abilities for so many years, they had their targets. Lured into the ritual under false pretences, the Millers had their magic stolen and were murdered. The whole affair was carefully planned, but the SCPD are used to magical cases, and it didn’t take long to apprehend Milo’s parents. The two are now serving a life sentence.
The story was breaking news and highly publicised, with Milo’s face being plastered over The Cove as the next dark witch to be wary of. Eventually he couldn’t take the stigma any longer, and at 18, he fled Siren Cove. He’s spent the last ten years trying to bury the darker parts of his magic and himself, learning how to control his abilities and determined not to make the same mistakes his parents did. He’s been living in New York, studying magic and psychology quietly and working a string of crappy jobs to pay the rent.
PERSONALITY: Milo isn’t necessarily a bad guy, but his magic is dark, and he has to fight to keep it from seeping into his personality. He feels it like something heavy in the pit of his stomach, always waiting to be released. As a child, he was taught that it was okay and encouraged to use magic publicly and however he wanted, but he learned quickly during his parents trial that he needed to keep it hidden. The siphoning ability in particular he tries desperately to keep under wraps, and he’s always wary of touching anybody in case he draws from them, even though he’s spent years learning how to keep that from happening. Milo is quiet, a trait picked up when he left Siren Cove and spent the next ten years keeping his head down and his face out of the papers. He can come across a bit broody, and he doesn’t like to reminisce on what happened when he was 15. Most o his life since has been spent blocking it out and trying to become a different person. He has a sarcastic kind of humour, and he’s used to being alone so he doesn’t take to people easily. Given the chance to open up, Milo can actually be a nice person, and he has a hunger for knowledge that comes from all of his magical researching. He’ll talk your ear off about magic for a million years if he’s allowed to. He has a deep fascination for the psyche as well because he knows that his own needs to constantly be kept in check.
OPINION OF THE RIVALRY: Milo’s parents always scoffed a little at the rivalry; they thought the Thorntons had no business trying to keep witches at bay, but they also thought the Coombs should have just put them in their place in response. Milo doesn’t care much either way; he’s a little apprehensive about the close ties the Thorntons have to the police, but he doesn’t wish them any harm.
LIFESTYLE: Milo has been playing the life of the poor college student, working shifty jobs and living in a tiny apartment in NY for years, but upon his return to Siren Cove he has the Dumas family inheritance back. They weren’t overly rich, but his parent’s house is still standing empty and will be his lodgings, and there’s a modest bank account left to him that was originally meant to be his college fund. Relationship wise, Milo hasn’t really had anyone since Sarah. They were kids back then, but they had a connection that he’s never been able to find anywhere else. He’s tried to get close with a few people since during college, but his fear of his own powers makes it hard, and he’s got too much going in in his past to be able to share much of it with anyone outside of the town he grew up in.
POWERS & ABILITIES: If he let himself, Milo could be a very powerful dark witch. His power is all still there, buried beneath the surface and waiting to be tapped into. He loves magic, and nothing compares to the feeling of using it, but he’s refused to let himself do anything much more than basic everyday use spells for fear of letting go of his control. He’s spent a lot of time learning how to keep everything under control however, and he’s not likely to slip and hurt anyone unless he’s seriously stressed or fatigued. His strongest ability is the same siphoning power his father had; he is able to drain magic from other witches or magical things in order to give himself more strength.
